Named after a “resting or waiting place” at which First Nations peoples
would watch their fellow tribesmen depart with furs for trade on the
Saskatchewan
River, Nipawin’s past and present is framed by
water. Situated in central Saskatchewan—140
km (87 mi) east
of Prince
Albert—the town is best known for its water sports and close
proximity to Tobin
Lake and Codette
Lake.
Originally, the community was a small trading post along the river but
with the arrival of a Canadian Pacific Railway stop in 1912, it became
a service centre for the area—dealing in fur, then lumber and
agricultural products, and more recently recreation. Today
the area is renowned as an angler’s dream. Boasting the World Walleye
Ice Fishing Record on Lake Tobin, the town hosts various fishing
tournaments, including the Nipawin
Great Northern Pike Festival, which has
been held every July to September since the 1960s. The rural
resort community is also popular for its hiking, camping
and water activities at Nipawin
and District Regional Park, the links
at one of the province’s top golf
courses, and Wapiti
Valley Ski Hill's winter slopes.
